Eating Myths - Beef, Bacon, Bread
‘I suppose you’re going to tell me I have to stop eating beef.’
Nope.
Here’s the thing about some of the circulating eating wisdom: It’s wrong.
It might not seem like it, but we are in the midst of a food revolution. When Canada’s Food Guide was recently updated, numerous elements of the revolution could be seen front and centre. The guide now recognizes the value of eating as a social activity. Portion amounts and specific food examples were eliminated. Water was highlighted as the beverage of choice.
Why should we care if a food revolution is happening?
The side effects are great.
Up to this point, a big helping of shame has been doled out to people who eat foods labelled as ‘bad’. Beef. Bacon. Bread. Dessert. And a long list of others. The problem with the shame-based approach to eating is that it doesn’t help anyone (except maybe the self-righteous).
I won’t sit here and tell you that eating a pound of bacon a day is just fine. What I will tell you is the joy you get from meeting friends for Saturday morning bacon and eggs probably increases your quality of life immensely. Bacon can have a place in a good diet and a great life.
The same goes for many other choices on that list of ‘bad’ foods. Dessert can turn into a helping of fruit or dark chocolate brownies, bread is a valid carbohydrate choice, and beef is a great source of iron.
Check out my upcoming recipe for Buckwheat Breakfast Bread. I like to enjoy it with blueberry jam (also coming in my recipe resources soon).
